20-storey wooden buildings are safer in earthquakes
These structures are expected not to be damaged by earthquakes in which people can return to live in the building immediately after the earthquake.
Professor Shiling Pei of the Colorado School of Mines says the design of earthquake resistant buildings is important. Scientists are researching technologies to reduce the downtime of buildings after major earthquakes.
Based on detailed information obtained from experiments and related studies, the team will return to San Diego in 2020 to build a 10-storey wooden building with earthquake resistance.
In the recent San Diego test, the building and seismic safety system worked well. The test was conducted in minutes, simulating the 1994 Northridge earthquake. After the simulation, the building suffered no significant damage.
